  • Five candidate cities were bidding to host the Games of the 28 Olympiad: Athens, Greece, Buenos Aires, Argentina, CapeTown, RSA, Rome, Italy and Stockholm, Sweden.
  • In September 1997, at the 106th IOC session in Lausanne, Athens, Greece was selected as host city of Olympic games 2004. The final results of the fourth round of voting were following: Athens - 66 votes, Rome - 41.
  • Olympic Games returned to Greece, the birthplace of the first modern Olympics.

  • The President of Greece Konstantinos Stephanopoulos officially opened the Games of the 28 Olympiad at the new 100,000-seat Olympic stadium.
  • In track and field, men’s and women’s shot put events were held at the ancient stadium in Olympia.
  • Next event of the ancient Olympics - the marathon, was staged on the historic route, ending in old Panathinaiko Stadium, that was used as the main venue in 1896.
  • The American swimmer Michael Phelps set record, when he won total 8 medals (6 gold and 2 bronze) in a single Olympics.
  • It was the first Summer Olympic games for Jacques Rogge, a new President of the IOC, who was elected on 16 July 2001 at the 112th IOC session in Moscow
