  • In May 1931 at the 31st IOC session in Vienna, two Bavarian towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen were awarded to host Winter Olympic games.
  • Later, in 1935, Garmisch and Partenkirchen merged to form Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but this merger did not affect the IOC dicision in any way.
  • The other candidate cities were Schreiberhau, Braunlage-Schierke - both Germany and St.Moritz, Switzerland.

Some facts about 4 Winter Olympic Games,1936

  • Chancellor of Germany Adolf Hitler officially opened the 4 Winter Olympic games 1936 and Olympic flame was first lit at Winter games.
  • When IOC president Henri Baillet-Latour had seen the roadsigns in Garmisch-Partenkirchen which declared "Dogs and Jews not allowed", he demanded to remove them. German team included only one Jewish athlete - he was Rudi Ball, who played on the ice hockey team.
  • For the first time, Alpine skiing events were included in the olympic programme, however, the IOC declared that ski instructors could not take part in the Olympic games because they were professionals. In response, Swiss and Austrian skiers boycotted the Games.
  • The famous Norwegian Sonja Henie, who took part in all Winter Olympic games, won her third gold medal in women's figure skating.
