  • In May 1978 at the 80th IOC session in Athens, Sarajevo, Yugoslavia was selected to host the 14 Winter Olympic games in 1984.
  • The second round of the voting gave the following results: Sarajevo - 39 votes, Sapporo, Japan - 36. The last candidate city was Falun, Sweden - 8 votes in the first round.
  • It was the first Winter Olympic games in a Socialist country.

  • President of Yugoslavia Mika Spiljak officially opened the 14 Winter Olympic games 1984.
  • The Games was remembered by the biggest snowfalls and gale-force wind, which corrected the alpine skiing schedule.
  • Because of a commercial contract, a few top Alpine skiers - Ingemar Stenmark, Sweden, Hanni Wenzel, Liechtenstein were banned for the 1984 Olympics.
  • Soviet ice hockey team again was the best and a great goalkeeper Vladislav Tretiak won his third gold medal.
  • To increase the amount of athletes, the IOC offered to pay the expenses of one male and one female athlete from each country taking part.
  • For the first time, black African skier from Senegal - Lamine Gueye competed in the Winter Olympics.
  • Unfortunately, a lot of the Olympic sights were destroyed by the Civil war in the early 1990s.
